Synopsis from the Centenary Book:
The Faculty of Medicine at Sydney University formally came into being on 13 June 1856 with the appointment by the University Senate of a Board of eight Medical Examiners, presided over by Professor John Smith (MD Aberdeen) as Dean. Under the by-laws adopted on 3 December 1855, this Board was to constitute the Faculty of Medicine until such time as a Medical School was opened and medical Professors, in addition to Smith (who was the foundation Professor of Chemistry and Experimental Physics), had been appointed. Between 1856 and 1883 there were eleven successful candidates for the MB examination. The Faculty at Sydney is thus the oldest Faculty of Medicine in Australia and New Zealand, antedating Melbourne's by five years. Nevertheless, Melbourne awarded its first MB by examination some four years before Sydney, and opened its Medical School twenty years sooner.
The Centenary Book recounts the story underlying these events, and traces the development of the Sydney Faculty and its Medical School from its initial, non-teaching role, to its present position of pre-eminence.
Published in 1984, copies are still available to purchase. The book is case bound with a dust jacket.
